Chapter Eight

SLASHED

MANCHESTER UNITED’S HISTORIC rivalry with Liverpool, both on and off the pitch, appeared by the early Nineties to have cooled from its dangerously hostile levels of the previous decade. The dreadful and deeply sobering effects of the Heysel and Hillsborough Disasters had cooled the activities of Liverpool’s hooligan element. It also, for a while, eradicated the inflammatory ‘Munich’ chants directed at United’s crowd. At the same time, many of the original lads on both sides, now older and wiser than in their reckless youth, were devoting their energies to money-making activities of various kinds, legal and illegal, and sometimes even found it mutually beneficial to work together or at least tolerate each other. Finally, Liverpool’s relative decline as a team meant other sides, especially Leeds United and then Arsenal, overtook the Merseysiders as the Mancunians’ main ‘enemy’. The horrific slashings of a decade before were in the past, and ordinary supporters of both teams could for the first time in decades travel to their rivals’ ground without fear.

Old habits and enmities died hard, however.
